If you still think of Muramasa as a Vita game you played in handheld chunks, PlayStation just put a date on the reunion. Muramasa: Revenant Blades lands February 4, 2027 on PS5 — Vanillaware’s HD pass over Muramasa: Rebirth and the Genroku Legends side story, sold as one game.
That comes from Sony’s September 10 blog post, not a leak. Same day they dropped a gameplay showcase on the official PlayStation YouTube channel.
What’s in the PS5 version
The pitch is simple: both Vita campaigns, cleaned up for a TV, plus extras the original Western release never had. English voiceover is the obvious one. Rebirth over here was text. This time the lines are spoken.
You still get six separate stories, and you can play them in whatever order you want. The cast is Kisuke, Momohime, Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki. Genroku-era Japan, spirits everywhere, the cursed blade Muramasa in the mix. One character is stuck with that sword. Another is out for revenge. Another is chasing a romance like it’s the whole plot. Sony’s write-up treats each tale as self-contained.
Combat is the same idea people remember: tap out normals until a combo happens, then throw dashes and jumps in so you’re fighting on the ground and in the air. Parries work on melee. Time it right and you can bat projectiles back too.
Skills sit on one button — heavy singles, wide sweeps, ranged hits — and they’re meant to slot into those normal strings instead of replacing them. Kisuke and Momohime still go to the swordsmith Muramasa to forge blades with skills baked in. The other four train, pick up techniques, and make charms that change how a form or weapon behaves. Both routes eat souls from enemies. No souls, no upgrades. That’s the loop.
There’s a mastery layer on top. Use a skill enough and you can park up to three mastered ones for ground fighting and three for air, then flick between them on the D-pad. The more you spam a skill, the harder it hits. Sony’s wording, not ours.
If you want the old handheld versions, classic mode is in the box: Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Genroku Legends as they were on Vita, with the graphics touched up. There’s also a Scroll illustration gallery, a Character Viewer for animations and backgrounds, and a Replay mode for story scenes you’ve already seen.
PS5, 4K, and the specs Sony didn’t give
This is a PS5 game. Nobody has announced a PS4 SKU. The Store concept page calls it a stunning 4K world. That’s the only official picture-quality line we’ve got.
Frame rate, install size, load times, quality vs. performance modes — Marvelous and Sony have not published those. If someone tells you it’s locked 60, they didn’t get that from the announcement.
Price, editions, preload
Store listing looks like a standard edition. No price. Pre-orders aren’t up. Wishlist it if you want the email when that changes.
Vanillaware physicals have gone fancy before — Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, 13 Sentinels — so a chunky collector’s box wouldn’t shock anyone. It also hasn’t been shown. No deluxe tier, season pass, or early-access perk in the blog post. Base game is supposed to include all six characters, both progression tracks, classic mode, and the galleries.
Preload date: none. Other PS5 digital releases often unlock a couple of days early. That is a habit, not a promise for February 4.
The gameplay video
The YouTube title is Muramasa: Revenant Blades – Gameplay Showcase | PS5 Games, from PlayStation’s own channel, posted with the date reveal. The blog says it covers the swordplay and how characters grow. We’re not going to narrate every shot as if we had a shot list. Watch the embed above.
