How Long Will PS5 Last? PS6 launch date forecast

Do you wonder how long will PS5 Last? or when will PS6 launch? These questions come into the mind of existing as well as future PS5 owners. PS5 is the next-generation PlayStation console, and here’s how long will PS5 last, along with PS6 release date prediction:

Going by the historical trends, we can assume PS6 will launch after 5.03 to 6.9 Years of the PS5 launch date. This means it can launch between November 2025 to November 2027. For PS5, we can easily add 2-3 Years of extended support from Sony and other game developers even after PS6 is launched. This gives us a total lifespan of PS5 to be at least 9 to 10 Years.

In this article, we will show you in detail how we reached the dates above by analyzing the historical data for PlayStation Consoles. We will discuss in detail how long will PS5 last? We will also answer your query – What will be the lifespan of PS5? We will also discuss when we can expect PS6?

We’ve seen the release dates for previous PlayStation consoles and deduced the data accordingly to get an excellent estimate of the PS5 lifespan and PS6 release dates. We will predict when the PS6 will be released based on previous console launch dates. So what does the future hold for PlayStation? Let’s find out?

How long will PS5 last?

Well, let’s take a look at the lifespans of previous generations of PlayStation Consoles. Here is a chart to depict the time difference between the release dates of all the PlayStation consoles (in years):

We get a pretty good idea by looking at the chart above that Sony constantly releases newer PlayStation models. For example, after the launch of the PlayStation 2 Fat version, a new PS2 was released called the PS2 slimline. We also saw this trend in the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles. Going by this trend, we can also expect Sony to release an enhanced or a slim version of the PS5 console.

Please see the table containing the information for the time difference between PlayStation console release dates (in days and years).

The table shows that the average time difference between all the PlayStation console release dates comes at 2.52 Years.

Please notice that the ‘slimline’ version of a PlayStation console is released after the launch of a base or ‘Fat’ version of the PlayStation console. For example, the PS2 ‘slimline’ was released after 4.01 Years of the PS2′ Fat’ version. Similarly, PS3′ slim’ was released after 2.79 Years, and PS4 slim was released after 2.83 Years of their respective ‘Fat’ versions. If we again take an average of only the mentioned data, we observe that it takes 3.21 Years on average for Sony to release the ‘slim’ version of a PlayStation console.

So how long will the base/fat PS5 last?

If we go by the historical trend, it can take up to 2.52 to 3.21 Years from the base/fat PS5 launch date until we see the next iteration of the PlayStation 5 console, a.k.a. PS5 ‘slim.’ Now, the PlayStation 5 base or ‘Fat’ version was released in November 2020, which means that we can expect the PS5′ slim’ version to be launched between May 2023 and January 2024.

This doesn’t mean that base/fat PS5 will become obsolete after PS5 slim launch date. The newer game titles will work on both ‘fat’ as well as ‘slim’ version of PS5 console.

What will be the lifespan of PS5?

The total lifespan of the PS5 console can be easily deduced by looking at the historical data. Please find the chart below depicting the time difference between the release dates of ‘base’ or ‘Fat’ PlayStation Consoles.

As you can see from the chart above, there’s an upward trend in release dates of the ‘base’ or ‘fat’ version of the console. We can safely say that the next-gen PS5 console will follow this pattern as well.

Let us look at the data in more detail. Please find the table below depicting the time difference between the release dates of ‘base’ or ‘Fat’ PlayStation Consoles. (in days as well in years).

The above table shows that the average time difference between the release dates of ‘base’ or ‘Fat’ PlayStation Consoles is 5.03 Years. If you look carefully at the table, you will also find that both the PS4 and PS5 were launched exactly 6.99 Years after their previous generation, which also happens to be the max value in the above table.

So what will be the total lifespan of PS5?

Taking the above data into account, we can say that PS6 will launch after 5.03 to 6.9 years after the PS5 launch date. We can easily add 2-3 Years of extended support from Sony and other game developers for PS5. This gives us a total lifespan of at least 9 to 10 Years.

As mentioned previously, this doesn’t mean there won’t be any mid-cycle refresh for PS5. Sony will probably come out with a ‘slim’ or ‘pro’ version of PS5. The mid-cycle refresh will be a minor enhancement on the base PS5 console, as with the case of the PS4.

Therefore, if you are still in a fix and not sure whether you want to invest in a PS5 or want, we recommend that you take the plunge and get a PS5 console and enjoy a long lifespan and support from Sony. When can we expect PS6?

Going by the historical trend mentioned above, we can safely assume that the PS6 will be launched somewhere between November 2025 and 2027.

Will the launch of PS6 mean that PS5’s lifespan is over? We would like to disagree on this. As you can see in the case of PS4, new games are still being launched for PS4, e.g., God of War Ragnarok, even after the launch of PS5. Sony takes care of its customers; they will not abandon the PS4 user base just because PS5 has been launched. Likely, PS5 will also be given the same awesome treatment and care by Sony. Although eventually, the game developers will shift their focus to the latest next-gen console, and PS6 will then become mainstream.
