Why Does PlayStation 5 Have No Sound? Quick Fixes

Why Does PlayStation 5 Have No Sound Quick Fixes

Are you struggling with audio issues with your PS5 and wondering why does PlayStation 5 have no sound? Worry no more; you can try the fixes mentioned in this article to help you resolve the no-sound issue with PS5. Here is the list of steps to consider while troubleshooting the no-sound issue on your PS5:

  • Unmute your PS5 as well as T.V.
  • Restart your PS5 and T.V.
  • Connect only your PS5 to T.V. and remove other HDMI cables.
  • Check the Output Device and HDMI Device Type Settings on your PS5.
  • Change the Output Device to Controller Headset for testing.
  • Connect any other device to T.V., such as a streaming box.
  • Use a different HDMI port on the T.V. to connect PS5.
  • Use a different HDMI cable to connect PS5 with T.V.
  • Remove HDMI splitters from your PS5.
  • Change Audio Format on your PS5.
  • Update PS5’s software version.
  • Restore PS5 to default factory settings.

We can’t use an optical cable to troubleshoot any sound issue as the PS5 doesn’t have any audio out port like the PS4; it uses HDMI to transfer both video and audio. The other thing to consider here is whether you are using any T.V. soundbar or A.V. receiver with your PS5; we will discuss this and all the other points in detail, showing you the step-by-step process to resolve the PS5 sound issue. Let’s start with the first troubleshooting step.

Unmute your PS5 as well as T.V.

The first and foremost step you can take to resolve the issue and answer why PlayStation 5 has no sound unmuting your devices. As simple as it sounds, this might be the underlying issue. Pick up the remote of your T.V. and unmute your T.V. The next step is to unmute your PS5 as well.

The DualSense controller has a mute button just below the P.S. logo on the front. This button can be pressed by mistake while playing games and can go unnoticed quickly. If that is the case, to unmute your PlayStation 5, hold the mute button again so that the pulsating orange color on the button goes away. If this resolves your issue, then voila! You can carry on with your gaming session. P.S. – We all are humans, and we may make simple mistakes unknowingly.

Restart your PS5 and T.V.

The other thing you can do to resolve the no sound issue with your PS5 is restarting your devices. Go ahead and turn off both your PS5 and T.V. and start them once again. Sometimes a simple reboot can alleviate minor issues. If this simple step doesn’t resolve the issue and still your PlayStation 5 has no sound, worry not; you can read the following steps to resolve the no-sound issue.

Connect only your PS5 to the T.V. and remove other HDMI cables.

Some of the other devices might interfere with your PS5 and T.V. connection. Therefore to troubleshoot this, disconnect all the other devices from your Television and connect only the PlayStation 5 console to your T.V. Disconnect the cables of other devices entirely from your T.V. and only start the PS5 console. Many a time, this resolves the issue of no sound output. If you need any help connecting your PS5 to TV then you can also read our guide on How To Connect PS5 To TV? Best settings explained. If you happen to have a monitor as your display then you can read our guide on How To Connect PS5 To Monitor? Using HDMI or a Display Port.

Check the Output Device and HDMI Device Type Settings on your PS5.

The next step is to go into your PS5 settings and check that the Output Device and HDMI Device Type Settings on your PS5 are correctly configured. Remove any soundbar or amplifier as we will be using T.V. speakers to troubleshoot the issue. We will be sending audio output directly to T.V. speakers. Follow the below steps to do the same:

  • Open the Settings of your PS5 using your DualSense controller.
  • Afterward, choose Sound.
  • Then go to the Audio Output section.
  • Now, select the Output Device as HDMI Device(T.V.).
  • Also, select the HDMI Device Type as T.V.

Also, to route the audio to your T.V. speakers only, disconnect any headphones connected to your DualSense controller. You may also unpair and disconnect any wireless headphones connected to your PS5. You can also turn off the option to ‘Switch Output Device Automatically’; once this troubleshooting process is over, you can turn this back on.

Now check the Sound from your PS5 by playing any game or video on your PS5. Hopefully, this will resolve your issue, and you can now hear audio from your PS5 console on your T.V. speakers.

If Sound is coming from T.V. speakers, reconnect your soundbar or amplifier and then try selecting the Output Device as Soundbar or Amplifier

Change the Output Device to Controller Headset for testing.

You can also be sure that there is no issue with your PS5 by changing the Output Device to Headset. For that, first connect any headset to your PS5, either wirelessly or through the 3.5mm jack available on your DualSense controller, then do the following settings in your PS5:

  • Use your DualSense controller to open the Settings menu on your PS5.
  • Next, choose Sound.
  • Now, choose the Audio Output section.
  • Next, select the Output Device as Controller Headset.
  • Also, select Output to Headphones as All Audio.

Start a video or a game and put on the headphones that you connected to your PS5. If you happen to hear audio from your headsets, then it means the issue is with your T.V. speakers, HDMI cable, or HDMI port.

Connect any other device to T.V., such as a streaming box.

Let us narrow down to the underlying issue and pinpoint its root cause. The problem could be with your T.V. and not PS5. To know for sure, connect any other device to your T.V. such as a streaming box or if you happen to have a Smart T.V., then play some video/audio to know whether any output is coming or not.

If there is still no sound, then it means the issue might be with your T.V. or any of the connecting cables. On the other hand, if your Sound starts coming, then it means we need to troubleshoot some more. Read on to go to the next step.

Use a different HDMI port on the T.V. to connect PS5.

A faulty or broken HDMI port can also cause issues with your PS5 experience. Therefore, the next step in troubleshooting the no sound issue on PlayStation 5 is to use the HDMI port on your T.V. First, take out the HDMI cable that connects your PS5 to T.V. and plug it into any other free HDMI ports on your T.V.

Dust or any other material accumulating on the HDMI ports can cause a loose connection and create problems such as this one. Connect your PS5 to a different HDMI port on your T.V. You can also try plugging-unplugging on the same HDMI port to see if that fixes your issue. If your still your TV connected to the PlayStation 5 have no sound then we have some further steps for you.

Use a different HDMI cable to connect PS5 to T.V.

Sometimes a faulty HDMI cable can be the source of all issues, whether it is a video issue or, as being discussed here, an audio problem. Grab yourself a new HDMI cable, remove the old HDMI cable and connect your PS5 to your T.V. using the new HDMI cable. We hope that this resolves your audio problem. If it is not the case and your PlayStation 5 have no sound, we have plenty more steps to take further; read on to find out.

Remove HDMI splitters from your PS5.

If you are using HDMI splitters with your PlayStation 5 to connect it to a T.V. or soundbar. Then the issue may be those HDMI splitters as well. To confirm the same connect your P.S. directly to your T.V. without any HDMI splitters for the troubleshooting process and try playing any audio or game. This might resolve your issue, and you may finally have audio coming from your PS5 connected to TV.

Once you plug the PS5 directly into the T.V. and the sound problems disappear, you can be confident that the PS5 isn’t the problem; instead, it was an HDMI splitter.

Change Audio Format on your PS5.

You can also try changing the Audio Format(Priority) from Linear PCM to Bitstream(DTS) or Bitstream(Dolby) on your PS5 console. Linear PCM will enable PS5 to send decoded and uncompressed data to the speakers via the receivers(if any). But when you set the Audio Format to Bitstream, the receiver(if any) will process the sound data and then decode and produce uncompressed audio.

That being said, regardless of whether you choose Linear PCM or Bitstream, your speakers will output the same level of sound quality with both Linear PCM and Bitstream. Follow the below steps to change the Audio Format:

  • Open the Settings menu using your dualSense controller.
  • Then, select Sound.
  • Now, open the Audio Output section.
  • Then, try changing the Audio Format(Priority) from Linear PCM to Bitstream (DTS) or Bitstream (Dolby)

This might also help in resolving the no sound issue with your PS5.

Update PS5’s software version.

An outdated system firmware may also cause some issues with your PS5. Sony regularly releases system software updates for the PS5. Follow the below steps to check for any updates on your PS5:

  • Go to Settings on your PS5.
  • Then, select System.
  • Choose the System Software option.
  • Then select System Software Update and Settings.
  • Finally, choose Update System Software and select Update Using Internet.

If you find yourself in a position where your PlayStation 5 have no sound even after trying so many steps then we have yet another fix for you. Read on to find out.

Restore PS5 to default factory settings.

If you are sure that the underlying issue is with your PS5 then you can also fix this audio issue by restoring your PS5 to the default factory settings in safe mode. There is no need to worry about your game data because your PS5 settings will only be restored to their original state; the saved data on your hard drive will not be deleted.

Nevertheless, you can take an extra precautionary measure by backing up your console’s data. To do that, follow the below steps:

  • Open the Settings menu, then go to System.
  • Then open Backup and Restore.
  • Choose Back Up Your PS5, and then transfer your data to a USB drive.
PS5 Back Up and Restore

After the backup has been finished, we can restore the PS5 to default factory settings; follow the below steps:

  • Turn off your PS5 console by pressing the power button.
  • Then press and hold the power button again. You will hear the first beep when you press the power button, and after 7-8 seconds, you will hear a second beep. Immediately release the power button after hearing the second beep from your console.
  • Your PS5 should now be started in Safe Mode.
  • Plug your DualSense controller into the console using a USB cord.
  • Be careful in the safe mode menu while selecting any option. Only choose the option to Restore Default Settings as it will not delete the saved data on your system storage. This will only restore the PS5 console to the default factory settings.
  • Next, choose Yes and let the restoration process finish; after some time, the restoration will be completed.

Once finished, play any audio/video or a game on your PS5 to test whether any audio is coming from your PS5. We hope that this resolves the no audio issue on your PlayStation 5, and that you can play games normally. If this also doesn’t fix your problem and still your PlayStation 5 have no sound, we recommend getting in touch with PlayStation Support.
